Image by Getty Images via DaylifeI am at the Rush concert right now. Rush is a band that has been around for over thirty years. With eighteen albums produced and numerous live albums, they are one of the most successful bands in the history of rock music. Their latest album, Snakes and Arrows, is no disappointment. It follows their hard driving, fast paced musical style which has developed in the years that they have been making music. The best song, Far Cry, clocks in at just under five and a half minutes, has a slightly slower beat, and drives home the point that, although the music has evolved over the years, it still holds the basic musical ideals of Rush, which is to make good music without going overboard.
The tour that followed the album’s release (which is still happening, in Europe) contained one of the best concerts I have ever been to. They mixed their older music, including Subdivisions, Spirit of Radio, Tom Sawyer, and YYZ, with newer songs, such as the aforementioned Far Cry, Hope, The Larger Bowl (A Pantoum), and The Main Monkey Business for an incredible show. I went to the June 23rd concert at Nissan Pavilion in Bristow, Virginia, right outside of Washington, D.C. If you happen to be in Europe at the same time they are playing nearby, I would suggest you see them, as the experience is great. Between Geddy Lee’s amazing, shrill voice, Alex Lifeson’s incredible guitar work, and Neil Peart’s unrivaled drum solos, you can’t lose. Just remember to keep in mind that the show won’t last as you would like, as nothing good lasts for long.
All in all, I give the album a three star rating out of five, as it is decent work, though not quite on par with their earlier works, specifically Signals, 2112, Hemispheres, A Farewell to Kings, and Hold Your Fire. However, it is still worth it to buy this album.
